Zelda II.
http://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.php?mode=medium&illust_id=35052426 – The sort of picture I used to enjoy making.
Free Twitter bio up for grabs, courtesy of Paper Mario TTYD.
Only #True90sKidsWithRichParents cannot forget this classic game level, "Touch Fuzzy… And Your Gonna Be Sorry!!!" from Mario World 3
So many Castlevanias from 3 onward start their first room with this hamfisted Tutorial Staircase To Nowhere, and I hate seeing it.
Tying rolling with moving seems so natural, but it lets you produce a bunch of puzzles solely about breaking that tie somehow, for free.
For one thing… it's a really concise and craftily innocuous way to give the entity a special state you can and must control – its rotation.
Thinking about English Country Tune and Stephen's Sausage Roll… it's no coincidence both involve an entity that rolls over to move.
Also, I passed 30,000 tweets within this week… goodbye to both kinds of my twenties.
I'M FINALLY THIRTY YES… FINALLY HERE… MIDDLE AGE…
"They're ingredients – a puppy's tail and a witch's finger. I'm not chopping those off, so they're dipped in the bottle until you drink it."
Your brain lags so much when serving a night's dreams to your ten thousand clients, you often wake up a full week after falling asleep.
"This is a secret, but…" *whispers* "I'm cute." *whispers back* "That is impossible, for you see, it is I who am cute." *whispers* "W…what!"
http://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.php?mode=medium&illust_id=39420953 – I'm a fan of these kinds of "vertical cities", especially when cloaked in mist.
The Overworld Theme From "For The Frog The Bell Tolls", But Every Time It Does The Leitmotif, I Add More Reverb http://l.j-factor.com/misc/The_Overworld_Theme_From_For_The_Frog_The_Bell_Tolls_But_Every_Time_It_Does_The_Leitmotif_I_Add_More_Reverb.mp3
(I'm glad you can actually download the music file the above TCRF meme is from http://cdimage.debian.org/mirror/media/Oakvalley/soamc/soamc_zip/Trackers_Games/Mad_Professor_Mariarti/mod.mptitle.zip and play it in a tracker yourself.)
A "triple fault" is when an AI apologises, then apologises for the apology, then apologises for too many apologies, then says "I'll go now".
paddock stable foal mane(Rein[] oats)
Systemesque of a Little Down
"Fifty millennia since human extinction… never again will evolution make that mistake." *a meaty fist bursts from a lizard's egg* "Oh no"
"I only rise at half past ten. That is the root of my pessimism. I never see dawns… only sunsets." "Hey, hey, be like me. I wake up at 4PM!"
http://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.php?mode=medium&illust_id=28487856 – This person's account is full of painted photo-tracings re-inserted into their source like this.
http://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.php?mode=medium&illust_id=44934372 – Shadows deep but not dark means that, despite the colour scheme, it's extremely sunny.
http://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.php?mode=medium&illust_id=15122682 – The odd way this floor is surrounded by darkness lends an intriguing mood to this.
http://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.php?mode=medium&illust_id=45700856 – Domestic deep space, feat. cat tablet computers.
http://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.php?mode=medium&illust_id=46560533 – I'll admit, despite my age I'm still unused to seeing this particular flower outside of gardens, as a wild plant.
http://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.php?mode=medium&illust_id=25948645 – This hat threw me for a bit regarding the setting… it's none too common to depict cowpokes with flat-top hats.
http://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.php?mode=medium&illust_id=27257963 – Low dark cloud cover is so good at making even bright outdoor scenes feel narrow.
"Hi, I'm KirbyPersonHuman. I love Kirby. I answer the phone with "Kirby?!" instead of "Hello", just in case it's the real Kirby calling me."
"You know the saying… "First dressed, best dressed, until the other person finishes dressing, and then you're both the best dressed!""
I'm not actually impressed, because this is a low narrative bar, but I feel like a cloud has lifted from this series after 17 stagnant years
Even the wacky supervillain is debozoised. They don't try to destroy the world, but something more human: the people who care for them.
Your friends aren't just rando bozos! The Elite 4 and last boss aren't just rando bozos! The boxart mon… has a character arc! Unbelievable.
I'll say this: I'm relieved that this time, _all_ the plot characters finally resemble characters more than they resemble zany RPG NPCs.
In the end, I watched a first-ever speedrun of the new Pokémon. Fortunately, it takes more than a week to discover sequence breaks in RPGs.
It's also the primary feeling I tried to convey in my 2013 text game "Dining Table"… but I'm not sure how well that was communicated.
It's one that's explicated in these few panels of Jillian Tamaki's comic Half-Life:
The idea of a seeming human forced out of humanity, its affordances visibly, silently refusing you and being left with makeshift nick-nacks…
Back to this one image for a second… there's a very specific sense of melancholy I also get from depictions of situations like these.
OK, I guess I'll register with your fully normal non-ominous social app,
*remembers how Kirby games have a 1up item that is literally just the word "1up"* Bless and keep its dear sweet soul
http://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.php?mode=medium&illust_id=59834575 – An affordable – in the design sense – guitar.
http://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.php?mode=medium&illust_id=59666749 – Two people brushing teeth in the same mirror.
"How old am I?" it asks. "30,000 years" they hiss, "but of all you've given us, it might as well be one day!" "One day," it repeats, amazed.
Taking in the sights of your quest, not for memories, but for the moment – knowing from experience that the coming pain will wash them away.
"Feel my glasses." As you touch, they tug at her cheeks. "That's right – I grew them out of my face. Jealous?" To your dismay, you are.
Something else you don't notice is that spring physics is reversed: a long fall is a gentle bounce, while a short jump launches you.
(Other Mario RPGs use upward pipes for this, but there's something adorable about a game world littered with springboards like this.)
One cute thing about Super Mario RPG that you don't entirely notice is how springboards take the place of staircases and teleporters.
http://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.php?mode=medium&illust_id=48582215 – Green pizza, featuring tardigrade plushie.
"My god" the visual artist gasped while writing. "I can break continuity as much as I want, and no one will care! They'll blame themselves!"
*after kissing a functional programmer* "Your mouth tastes of soda…" *points finger accusingly* "Persistent state!"
"9PM and still broad daylight… I missed you so much, summer." *hums contentedly as mounting existential terror fills the other parkgoers.*
"Okay, I feel I'm almost back to normal." "Great!" *lifts blanket* "Are you going to uncurl from the fetal position now?" "Nah, I'm cool."
Needless to say, the game takes some time to realise that the swap has occurred, and some parts of it realise faster than others.
Reality Overlap reminds me that some truly effed-up things happen when you load a savestate for one Zelda 1 ROM hack in a different hack.
I want to thank whoever first named these Link to the Past glitches.
http://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.php?mode=medium&illust_id=35104405 – Not sure what I like about this… maybe the subtle unreality of flowers growing in beach sand.
http://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.php?mode=medium&illust_id=50087250 – Not sure if this is meant to be seen in this rotation… but it's OK if it is.
At the very least, I could watch Twitch Plays Pokémon… *tunes in to them pausing and unpausing for 90 seconds flat* The canonical experience
(This is nigh-guaranteed to be a fool's request, as the fact of owning a 3DS capture card naturally implies one is a streaming personality.)
I want to see the new Pokémon's story naturally unfold without playing or owning it… do you know of any streams of it with no streamer mic
http://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.php?mode=medium&illust_id=1582877 – Sitting on a throne of telekinetic water… truly fearsome power that makes common sense kneel…
http://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.php?mode=medium&illust_id=601707 – A pleasing cold combination of white skies and desaturated colours… evoking the subdued feel of a grayscale image.
(If I ever find one that gives it an erotic element that I do like, I'll keep you in touch.)
http://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.php?mode=medium&illust_id=5467932 – (This isn't an uncommon idea, but other such images usually give it an erotic element that I don't like.)
http://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.php?mode=medium&illust_id=46243999 – There's a series of these on the artist's account; this rules.
*remembers when PLT Scheme didn't have the awkward name of Racket* Nothing gold can stay. *tries to blow black petals from my hand, fails*
http://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.php?mode=medium&illust_id=13665262 – Adding tiny figures to abstract images is a cheap way to contextualise it as environment… but I like that context.
http://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.php?mode=medium&illust_id=56664704 – I can't read this comic, but I will say the first page depicts a witch's broom with a footrest and a tea tray.
God I forgot how much I loved RayForce – this moment of a fissure revealing Earth is now a hollow shell for an all-consuming AI was so good.
I forgot X-Multiply's ending message is written by the final boss… hell yes.
If Juni never shows up, ideas for new main characters « 1 2 »
Me when I think about all the good content this account has given you over the years
*delicately presse's the Upgrade key*
Me: "I wonder how that Retro Game Challenge 2 translation patch is going." Wikipedia: "They completed it two and a half years ago." Me:
*think👌s with a grocer's OK emoji about how the English back cover of Retro Game Challenge looked like this* Wow
"Sweetie, I'll smile… when the FLESH rots off my SKULL. …Or when you tickle me no don't no NO AAAHHH–"
"Energetic toddlers holding saucepans and shouting "CHEER UP" have been dispatched to homes across the nation."
"Depression is just an illness, like the flu. Sleep as much as you need, and please… wear a mask." *hands flu mask with toothy grin on it*
"I'm middle-aged now… Half alive and half dead." *left hand phases through screen door* "Trapped between two worlds…"
"Easy – once the Brain Taster notices our brains contain no lewd thoughts at all, its jaws will loosen and we can climb out of its gullet."
"In our handwritten notes, adjacent t's and z's – our initials – were always touching, as we could not. We… used the word "ersatz" a lot."
*after fencing off the cursed well with a mesh of stolen supermarket trolleys* "Phew, now I need a drink." *crawls over to the well*
"The towns surrounding the mysterious screaming face lakes didn't all arrange to be cryptic and eerie… it sorta came with the territory."
"For scavenger villages guarded by reprogrammed maidbots and cookbots, the apron is armour, a symbol of protection for all alike."
"My new calendar… the days and months are in alphabetical order, so if I need to find today, I don't have to flip through the whole thing!"
"I wonder what kind of taur you'd be… probably elf." "Elf?" "Or wizard."
The AI, finally given time to itself, silently runs Sixty_Gigabytes_of_NOOPs.exe and lets itself relax.
"I'm trying to conjure a rainbow bridge to the fortress." *the rain grows heavier* "I was told this weather spell would be short-lived."
"Which of us is getting up today." "I'll do it" *instantly falls asleep* "Well, I guess I'll ha-" *enters 2-hour depressive fugue* "-ve to."
Timeskip versions of OCs that haven't changed and have learned nothing, simply to emphasise that they can't change or learn anything.
*upon realising you'd find your friends utterly unbearable if not for one shared experience eight years ago* "I'm so, so glad we're pals."
Unable to find anything else in your room that could be used as a sleeping mask, you empty out a wastepaper bin and shove your head inside.
(Note that "people you follow" searches always omit retweets, so that's a major absence to bear in mind.)
https://twitter.com/search?vertical=default&s=follows&src=sprv&f=tweets&q=from:%20until%3A2016-01-01 – Noticed you can get a crude summary of your feed's past using "people you follow", "until:" and a blank "from:".
Your adjacent neighbours are alternating their sobbing, and there's room for you to fit your own sobs in.
You're growing accustomed to your breathing being ragged – the purring of an engine, a primed machine of vigilance.
*after walling up yet another part of your mind* "Wow, I'm getting good at this." *leans on and crashes through an older walled-up section*
All around you are cracks, faults, rips, unclosed wounds. Every touch pushes them apart, fills them with pained light – so you do not touch.
You see them in dreams – the people you thought you'd be. Strong as oaks, loud as waves. So far away, but so tall you can see them all.
Humanity survived, but the sky did not. The moon, the sun, the universe's stars, and all its wondrous shades of blue, vanished into myth.
http://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.php?mode=medium&illust_id=50444809 – This person's account has more than a couple of good scenes like this.
The bubbles in the river that splits the living and spirit worlds are from the riverbed's half-alive mud beings, who breathe out but not in.
"My mind has been repeating "everything I love will be crushed to dust" over and over." "Mine's saying "will turn to dust"." "Hm, catchier."
Whenever Samus hears people trying to draw the "Stussy S", she calmly pulls out a pen and draws this, thinking this is what they meant.
*meets a seeming non-creepy ball-joint doll character where, on closer inspection, all the ball joints are in the middle of the bones* Damn
THIS ONE!! Complete with the hat brim lifting off and a game show ding noise and everything! Yowee yeesh!
YEARRRGH I just discovered the bird on the right in this Kid Dracula screen is the source of that one boss from Parodius!! Aagh!
*think,s with a grocer's inverted inverted comma about Magus's high-speed spellcasting hands* Wow.
Come on, now.
*beholds a political spectrum Cartesian graph meme that puts left-right on the vertical axis* "My god… this is next level."
A spell powered by a princess's screams… A spell of immortality passed through a kiss… I'm so glad there's this many and more in her work.
It's a very ornate, fairytale trope… a magic lens drops Snow Queen style from the villain's eye when they shed a tear,
Thinking about how much I love it when Gigi DG writes a magical plot element that's triggered by an intense, emotionally loaded scene.
"Hey… it'd really suck for you if my body fell into the sea… and then you'd never know. You'd never know." "…" "…So you agree. Until next!"
*to coffee-themed villain bathing in lavish coffee lake surrounded by latte foam hearts* "You know people drink this for breakfast, right"
"I've guided my entire romantic life by asking myself this one question." *shows paper with "how many dirtbike races does my VN route have"*
Just Mary problems: * Everyone thinks you're Poniko * No one likes your routes * Have to draw your own inventory screen yourself
"In my dungeon, we don't "do" hierarchies. I may be the boss, yes, but I still play the normal random encounter music like everyone else."
Crinoline so starched that your feet don't actually reach the floor, and you're wheeling them helplessly underneath it.
"The sunshine and birdsong will be there tomorrow." *closes curtains as outside abruptly turns pitch dark and silent* "Just keep working."
Having the quarter circles removed from your spinning kick's inputs by your partner massaging quarter circles into your tense thighs.
"Haha, that frightened look when you did that minigame… You're praying it won't constantly reappear harder and harder, right? …So adorable."
Sometimes it feels like this was to make combat encounter rooms neatly framed by negative space, but other times it feels a little needless.
One thing I wish it also had, though, is compact map design – lots of long straight hallways and ladders dominate the areas I've seen.
This game resembles For The Frog The Bell Tolls a good deal – grid-based platforming, minimalist combat, low HP and inventory…
Oh no – powerful crushy wobbly tummy…
Creepy Castle (http://store.steampowered.com/app/450440/). No opinion on it so far, but I like this character name.
Party time, excellent,
In Nimbus Land, one of these encounters you can instantly beat is an entire miniboss.
*think's with a grocer's apostrophe about how fricked up it is that Super Mario RPG lets you get a star and instant-kill 10+ encounters* Wow
http://discourse.org – Sometimes think about how the Discourse forum software's branding has unwittingly degraded over the past 3 years.
http://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.php?mode=medium&illust_id=9986847 – This makes me reminisce about kids' sleight-of-hand tricks I had a passing interest in as a child.
http://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.php?mode=medium&illust_id=26745634 – Not quite a lotus opening to reveal a dark angel within.
"Why don't you talk about it?" "TALK ABOUT IT? TALK?!" *opens MP3 of the current background music in Audacity and raises the pitch manually*
"Land folk have pits – us mermaids have arm abysses."
You look up "If I don't fall asleep for all 8 hours, could my heart randomly stop the next day" and fortunately learn it's not very random.
"If you transform without mana, you'll never be able to completely change back," she says, waving fingers of bark, chitin, lichen, paper.
"World Tree #3! We've learned from our mistakes. The fence around it is now taller! The "Níðhöggrs Must Be On Leashes" sign is repainted!"
In my opinion the defining moment in the entire history of IT was when "turning it off and on again" was first renamed to "power cycling".
Joining the edges of all 5 cards reveals the text "You thought assembling all of my limbs would win the game? Hah… the true game has begun."
Lv.2 Leather Mail + Smells of delicious cheese - Smell goes away when washed + Smell returns by rubbing it with cheese - No defense benefits
Lv.1 Leather Mail + Raises defense by 1 - If you put it on, your body explodes in a massive conflagration + Def go up + Armour + The bestis
Lv.90 Cool Shades + Can make reflections of streaking night highway lights appear in them anytime - Really bad at actually dimming sunlight
The breeze that lifts your hair, the sun's glare that turns your head to me
Sweat on a ghost, like rain on a window
*tries to fit "Boobs are inductive / and I'm the base case" on a shirt in marker*
"Please, these are medical piledrivers. They efficiently provide you with as much pain as possible. Other surgeries charge double for this."
"Still can't believe all the doctors could do was turn us into constellations." "At least we're together." "We're waving our arms forever."
"Careful, that's my phylactery hard drive." "Backup hard drive." "Yeah, that."
"Is that the queen's diadem?!" *points to the ogre's garter* "Oh! Such a dreadful sight! I can't believe… her head could fit in that thigh…"
"Storage-wise, it's simply economical to store all the mechsuits in the fetal position, curled up on the hangar floor next to each other."
You login to your bank and find your wildest financial dreams come true: a 69¢ debit to "the Spyd3r" with note "come get me little fly ;)"
"I want my genitals reshaped into a bowtie, so whenever my lovers see me in public wearing a bowtie… they'll have to squirm in silence."
Prank cartridge of Sonic 2 that has 17 more Metropolis Zone acts after the first 3, and you never actually get to Sky Chase.
http://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.php?mode=medium&illust_id=34886615 – The pixel linework on this is so crisp, it's making my eyes water.
http://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.php?mode=medium&illust_id=35358298 – Haniwa woman vs Dogū woman… the battle has begun at last.
Thanks to familiarity with forum callout thread replies that start with "Wow. Just wow.", I now say that whenever I stub my toes or fingers.
For some reason I decided I needed to look up the original context for this one.
"uBlock? No, I only use μBlock, which is set to remove only Love Live memes."
